Sleep-in today but only if you don't want breakfast and I love the breakfasts on board, especially the Vegemite. Fancy having Vegemite in Europe! It was a cruising morning, broken up a trivial pursuit event in which we came third - 4 in our team compared to 12 in the winning team. Must remember: Titanic was built in Belfast.
At Regensburg we moored and boarded buses to Kelheim to get on a launch for the Danube Gorge trip, too narrow for our boat. Ludwig the One went mad in Kelheim and built this amazing folly on top of a hill
Gentle trip along the Danube (disappointingly it's not blue) past towering limestone cliffs and school kids learning to kayak
to Welltenburg Abbey. ABC said David then had to admit it is the most beautiful church inside we've ever seen.
Part of the charm was SITTING DOWN while Annelise told us what we were looking at and its significance.
That's St George killing the dragon and rescuing a princess at the altar and his horse is the largest one in a church in Europe
The ceiling is glorious:
After all that cultural uplift we were released into the courtyard to sample the monks' special dark beer and a very fresh pretzel.
This is the third beer of my life I've liked.
Gorgeous sunset on the roof after dinner.
On the way back to the boat our guide described how the forests of Bavaria are full of wild boar - about 68,000 - more than hunters can cope with and they have no natural predators so they have imported 10 registered wolf packs from the Czech Republic. REGISTERED wolf packs??!! What is the world coming to?
He was asked: what has happened to all the Syrian refugees from 2 years ago? His answer: each town or city has had to take a quota; Regensburg took more than its quota because the Social Democrat mayor thought they could cope. They have - and our guide says he can see no difference. The adults have been given good jobs, the kids are in school and older kids are in uni or apprenticeships. The major problem is the language but no doubt they are making huge efforts to overcome that.
